MaxiTurn EcoPeel: Efficient bar peeling with combined roughing and finishing

With the MaxiTurn EcoPeel, CERATIZIT introduces an indexable insert system for bar peeling that combines roughing and finishing operations within a single tool concept. The system is designed for high feed rates, hard surface layers, and demanding requirements in terms of dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Bar peeling is a challenging turning process. Rolled or forged bars often feature hard surface layers that lead to increased tool wear, while at the same time high roundness, tight tolerances, and consistent surface finishes are required at elevated feed rates. EcoPeel addresses these requirements through a divided chip removal strategy within one insert.

Divided chip removal for improved process stability

The core principle of EcoPeel is the separation of roughing and finishing functions within a single insert. Approximately 80% of the material removal is performed by a leading roughing edge, while the trailing finishing edge removes only about 20% of the chip volume. This targeted load distribution significantly reduces the mechanical and thermal stress on the finishing edge, resulting in increased tool life and improved process reliability.

At the same time, splitting the cutting action produces thinner chips and improves chip control. In practice, chip volume can be significantly reduced compared to conventional single-edge solutions, which is a key advantage when machining long, continuous chips in bar peeling operations.

Higher feed rates under stable cutting conditions

Another defining feature of the EcoPeel system is the large radius of the roughing edge. This allows higher feed rates while maintaining smooth cutting behavior. Due to the reduced load on the finishing edge, sharper cutting edges can be applied, leading to lower cutting forces, improved surface quality, and reduced stress on the machine.

The lower load per cutting edge has a positive effect on tool life, process stability, and repeatability. In many applications, a separate finishing pass can be eliminated, as the material can be peeled directly to final diameter in a single operation.

Compact system within the MaxiTurn product family

EcoPeel is part of the MaxiTurn product family and is designed as a cassette-based system for bar peeling operations. Its compact design enables use on a wide range of bar peeling machines. Depending on the configuration, the indexable inserts offer multiple usable cutting edges, reducing tool changes and improving overall cost efficiency.

By combining roughing and finishing functions in a single insert, tool logistics are simplified and the number of different insert geometries required in inventory is reduced.

Developed with a strong focus on practical application

The EcoPeel system was developed in close cooperation with users from the bar steel industry and validated under real production conditions. The objective was to create a robust tooling solution that combines high material removal rates with consistent quality and reliable process stability.

With MaxiTurn EcoPeel, CERATIZIT expands its bar peeling portfolio with a solution focused on productivity, reduced complexity, and stable machining processes – particularly for demanding materials and high feed applications.
