Kappa optronics: Contract Signed with the German Bundeswehr for Gun Barrel Inspection Systems

Kappa optronics announces the signing of a contract with the German Bundeswehr for the delivery of 22 RIB 4D inspection systems for inspecting the gun barrels on the Leopard 2 battle tank and the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer. These systems will be delivered later this year and will serve as the designated testing and measurement tools for weapon inspectors within the German armed forces Bundeswehr.

As a pioneer in the field of inspecting large-caliber gun barrels, Kappa has developed groundbreaking inspection solutions for the Bundeswehr and international customers with decades of experience. The proven systems are used worldwide to ensure the safety and firing accuracy of large-caliber weapon systems. The recently introduced latest generation RIB 4D offers a leap in efficiency through the combination of laser scanning and camera technology. What sets it apart is its ability to measure different diameters and types of gun barrels, whether smoothbore or rifled. The fully automatic digitalization of the inner surface also allows for the separation of scanning and analysis, which can be performed both on-site and remotely. Currently, these new systems are designed for 120mm calibers of the Leopard 2 and 155mm of the PzH 2000 and K9 howitzers, among others. Adaptations for additional caliber types are in preparation.

"We are very pleased with this contract with the Bundeswehr. It is the result of a long-standing and trusting partnership. To develop a system like this, you need not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of the needs of the user side," said Christian Henn, responsible for Business Development in the Defense Land sector at Kappa. "The key to excellent performance in the field is the careful maintenance of the materials in use. The Bundeswehr places special emphasis on this, and our state-of-the-art inspection system supports this task with precision and efficiency."

"We see a significant demand for the inspection system," added Sebastian Vreemann, Sales Director at Kappa. With the new gun barrel inspection system RIB 4D, Kappa offers advanced "Made in Germany" technology and has the most efficient system globally. "Our systems are fully developed and readily available in the market," Vreemann emphasized, stating that this is currently crucial for procurement not only in Germany but also internationally. Additionally, there is a strong demand for solutions in the medium-caliber range, and promising discussions are underway. Accordingly, the Lower Saxony-based company is consistently expanding its production capacities at its headquarters near Göttingen / Germany.
