International Knowledge Exchange at the SKZ

The SKZ Plastics Center recently welcomed two up-and-coming specialists from the United Arab Emirates to an intensive training and certification program in the field of plastic welding and joining technology. The visit underscores the growing global demand for German expertise in plastics processing and quality assurance.

Specialists from the United Arab Emirates Successfully Complete Advanced Training in Plastic Welding

Over the course of several weeks, the participants completed a comprehensive training program that combined theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on exercises. The training focused on plastic materials, welding technologies for piping systems, quality assurance methods, and modern testing procedures for welded joints.

As part of the program, the guests successfully completed the internationally recognized DVS Course 2212-1 and gained in-depth knowledge of plastic welding processes and relevant industry standards. In addition, they were involved in research-related projects and activities within the SKZ’s infrastructure and piping technology projects.

Key training topics included:

  • Current challenges and developments in welded plastic pipe systems
  • Electric welding and process optimization
  • Practical application of welding defects to develop AI-supported ultrasonic testing methods
  • Heating element butt welding with different quality levels
  • Mechanical and visual testing of welded joints
  • Evaluation and assessment of weld quality
  • Development of innovative testing methods to evaluate the long-term behavior of plastic pipe joints

Throughout the training program, the participants demonstrated a high level of commitment, technical interest, and dedication. The combination of hands-on welding exercises and research-oriented activities provided valuable insights into state-of-the-art joining technologies and quality assurance procedures.

At the conclusion of the program, both participants received certificates attesting to the successful completion of their training at SKZ. The certificates document the skills acquired during their stay and mark an important milestone in their professional development.

“International training programs like this one make an important contribution to the exchange of knowledge and best practices within the global plastics industry,” explains Eduard Kraus, Head of the Joining and Surface Technology Division at SKZ. “We are pleased to support young specialists from around the world in expanding their expertise and strengthening international cooperation,” adds Matthias Ruff, Sales Manager for Education & Research.

International Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer

As one of Europe’s leading research and training institutes for plastics, the SKZ is continuously expanding its international partnerships and offers practical training programs in the fields of plastics technology, welding, testing, and certification. The intensive training and qualification program described here is part of the SKZ’s long-term international strategy.

International knowledge transfer is a key component of the collaboration with companies that manufacture and process plastics. This approach is supported by close local partnerships, such as with BMC Gulf in the United Arab Emirates.

Another successful example of international knowledge transfer is the international DVS training course for plastic welders, Test Groups 1+2 according to DVS 2281/2282, held at the SKZ. Participants acquire knowledge and practical skills in welding semi-finished plastic products and plastic pipes for container construction as well as industrial applications.

The program is aimed at specialists from companies in the fields of industrial equipment manufacturing, plant engineering, piping construction, metalworking, and the processing of semi-finished products. This expertise is of great importance, for example, for industries involved in infrastructure and energy projects.
