  • The central banking and financial infrastructure expert is moving from Technische Universität Berlin to Frankfurt School
  • Starting 1 September, Ulrich Bindseil will strengthen the Centre for Digital Economics and the Centre for Central Banking

Frankfurt School of Finance & Management has appointed Professor Ulrich Bindseil as a Professor of Practice in Financial Infrastructure, effective 1 September. He will join the Economics & Law Department and strengthen the Centre for Digital Economics (C4DE) as well as the Centre for Central Banking. Ulrich Bindseil is moving from Technische Universität Berlin to Frankfurt School.

With his extensive experience in European central banking and his comprehensive expertise in financial market infrastructure, payments and monetary innovation, Ulrich Bindseil will contribute to research, teaching and knowledge transfer at Frankfurt School. His work focuses in particular on payment and market infrastructures, cross-border payments and new forms of money such as stablecoins and central bank digital currencies.

Professor Markus Reisinger, Head of the Economics & Law Department and Professor of Industrial Economics and Microeconomics, adds: “We are very happy that Ulrich Bindseil will join the Economics & Law Department at Frankfurt School. With his expertise in central banking and his long-standing experience on the digital economy and financial technologies, he is a perfect fit to the Department and Frankfurt School in general.”

Professor Co-Pierre Georg, Director of the Centre for Digital Economics, says: “We are witnessing a fundamental overhaul of core financial market infrastructure, enabled by new technologies like distributed ledgers. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of financial markets, and we are excited to have a world-leading expert like Ulrich Bindseil join Frankfurt School and the Centre for the Digital Economy. This is also an amazing opportunity for our Master’s in Financial Technology students, who will directly benefit by learning about European financial market infrastructure from one of its leading architects.”

Professor Emanuel Mönch, Co-Director of the Centre for Central Banking, explains: “Ulrich Bindseil is an internationally renowned expert and thought leader on monetary policy implementation, payment systems and financial infrastructures. With his deep knowledge and network in the regulatory community, he perfectly complements our faculty and the Centre for Central Banking at Frankfurt School."

Professor Ulrich Bindseil says: “I am delighted to join Frankfurt School, where I can help bridge two of its great strengths, central banking and digital economy. Few institutions are as well placed to connect the two, at a moment when central banking is being reshaped by financial technologies already proven elsewhere.”

Ulrich Bindseil

Before joining Frankfurt School, Ulrich Bindseil was an Honorary Professor at Technische Universität Berlin. He worked in central banking for a total of 31 years: at Deutsche Bundesbank from 1994 to 1997, at the European Monetary Institute from 1997 to 1998 and at the European Central Bank (ECB) from 1998 to 2025. At the ECB, he was Head of Risk Management from 2005 to 2008, Director General of Market Operations from 2012 to 2019 and Director General of Market Infrastructure and Payments from 2019 to 2025. He was also a member of several committees of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), including the Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS), the Markets Committee and the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI).

His current research focuses on payment and market infrastructures, including cross-border payments, and on monetary innovations such as stablecoins and central bank digital currencies.

Ulrich Bindseil is the author of numerous books.
