Open by Design: GK Continues to Democratize Retail Platform Innovation

GK Software, a global leader in cloud-native retail technology and a Fujitsu company, today announced advancements to its open platform strategy that accelerate how retailers and technology partners build on and extend the GK CLOUD4RETAIL platform. Previewed at GK’s 2026 Retail Innovation Summit in Dallas, the initiative expands GK’s already-open architecture to give the company’s growing partner network faster, more structured access to the platform and ensure retailers can continuously incorporate new capabilities as their needs and the technology landscape evolve.

GK announces this development from a position of demonstrated strength. The company was recognized as a Leader in the 2025 IDC MarketScape for Worldwide POS Software Platform Vendors in Retail Fuel and Convenience, with IDC citing its highly configurable platform and strong fuel partner ecosystem. Globally, GK has delivered the most new installations among major POS vendors in four of the past five years, including to seven of the 15 largest convenience retailers in the United States.

Extending an Open Platform Built to Support Rapid Innovation

GK CLOUD4RETAIL is a partner-agnostic platform, built on open APIs and a modular architecture that enables integration across a wide range of technology providers. It delivers a resilient core and an open extension layer that provides retailers and partners with a governed, scalable path to continuous innovation. The architecture rests on five core principles:

  • Microservices: Functional modules that are replaceable and independently scalable, enabling continuous innovation without disrupting core operations.
  • API-first: Clearly defined, documented interfaces that allow partners and customers to extend the platform without core changes.
Cloud-native: Stateless, automatically deployable, and built for operational economies of scale across global retail environments.
  • Headless: The front end (e.g. cash register screen or app) and the back end are separated from one another.
Edge resilience: Store operations that stay reliable even when network connectivity is disrupted, which is non-negotiable for high-volume convenience and fuel retailers.
  • Machine ready (MCP): Platform capabilities built for AI agents and automated tools as first-class consumers, positioning GK for the next generation of agentic retail applications.

GK DevHub: Putting the Platform in Partners‘ Hands

In addition to the existing SDK, API access & sandbox, GK is taking developer experience to the next level. To accelerate partner and customer development, GK will launch the GK DevHub, a unified environment that brings together API documentation, SDK guides, configuration guides, enabling AI-assisted tooling in a single destination.

The GK DevHub enables customers and partners to build and deploy their own extensions especially via AI-assisted tooling without touching the underlying service layer. Leveraging GK’s design library, these extensions ensure a seamless, visually consistent experience to the user.

This will also enable customers and implementation partners to create apps that launch with POS interaction immediately. For example, to create protoype apps instantly via prompting direct in the environment.

An Ecosystem That Covers Every Dimension of Modern Retail

GK’s platform operates independently of any single partner, ensuring retailers maintain optionality across all technology categories. Delivering a seamless experience for today’s consumer – across the forecourt, the checkout, the kitchen, and the customer’s phone – requires purpose-built capabilities from specialized partners, integrated on a platform built to accommodate them. At the 2026 Retail Innovation Summit, a representative sample of GK partners demonstrated that vision in action:

  • Cloud & infrastructure: The foundation that makes global scale and AI-readiness possible. AWS provides the cloud infrastructure that underpins GK CLOUD4RETAIL’s ability to serve enterprise retailers at scale across thousands of locations and dozens of markets.
  • Hardware: Purpose-built devices for every retail touchpoint, certified and integrated with GK CLOUD4RETAIL. Partners such as EloIngenicoMicrotouch, and Zebra Technologies collectively cover stationary POS, mobile associate, and customer self-service across grocery, convenience, and general retail.
  • Solutions & innovation: Allied ElectronicsAbacusAltaineDover Fuel Solutions, and Opterus are building specialized capabilities that extend the GK platform into task management, workforce communications, and emerging retail use cases that keep store teams connected and operations running at scale.
  • Implementation: The expertise that translates platform capabilities into operational reality. Cambridge Retail AdvisorsKitestringRedsis, and Thynkactive are among those bringing the professional services depth that enterprise and convenience retailers depend on to bring multi-format GK deployments to life.

“Retailers have always needed an ecosystem to succeed,” said Bill Miller, General Manager and President, GK Americas. “What’s changed is the pace of innovation and deployment required to adapt to customer expectations. The capabilities that matter most today – mobile ordering and emerging third-party integrations – aren’t all coming from a single vendor. Our GK CLOUD4RETAIL platform is the connective tissue that makes all of it work together, and this initiative ensures our partners can build on it quickly and confidently as those needs evolve."
