From Pick to Delivery: Optimise Fulfillment with Data

Especially during high shipment volumes and seasonal peaks, even small delays can add up. This makes it essential to view fulfillment as one continuous process and connect operational warehouse data with shipping and carrier information. For Danish fulfillment operations, this can also include different delivery models such as home delivery, service points and parcel shops, which are well established in the Danish parcel market.
Fulfillment starts long before parcel creation
With COSYS Warehouse Management Software, internal fulfillment processes can be managed digitally. Orders are provided for processing, items are picked, stock movements are documented and completed shipments are prepared for goods issue.
During picking, employees receive their orders on a mobile device and confirm items and storage locations by scanning barcodes. Different picking strategies such as single-order, multi-order or batch picking, combined with optimised picking routes, help manage larger order volumes efficiently.
The Zebra TC501, for example, can be used for mobile data capture. The full-touch mobile computer supports employees throughout mobile workflows from picking to goods issue.
This already generates valuable timestamps and process data within the warehouse: When was an order started? How long did picking take? When was the order completely picked? And when was it ready for shipping?
What happens between packing and carrier handover?
Picking is followed by packing, parcel creation and shipping preparation. This transition is particularly important for process analysis.
If a parcel is ready at 10:15 a.m. but is not handed over to the carrier until 4:30 p.m., the delay did not occur during transport. With high shipment volumes, such waiting times can indicate insufficient capacities, unsuitable collection schedules or inefficient internal processes.
COSYS connects warehouse processes with in-house logistics. Stock movements and status changes are recorded digitally, meaning the traceable journey of an order does not end with the final pick.
Photo documentation can also document shipment conditions or completed consignments. Computer Vision provides an additional basis for automatically analysing information contained in images.
Add carrier data after handover
Once a parcel leaves the internal fulfillment process, the external part of the delivery journey begins. Connecting carrier data with the information already collected in the warehouse extends process visibility beyond goods issue.
Relevant carrier or API data can provide timestamps for events such as parcel handover, transport and final delivery. Combined with internal warehouse data, this creates a continuous timeline across the entire fulfillment process:
Picking → Packing → Parcel creation → Shipping preparation → Carrier handover → Delivery
This makes it possible to determine where delays actually occur. Was an order held up during picking or packing? Did the completed parcel spend too much time waiting for collection? Or did the delay only occur after it had left the warehouse?
Especially during periods of high or fluctuating shipment volumes, this distinction provides valuable context. Instead of evaluating delivery times in isolation, fulfillment managers can compare internal processing times with external transport times and identify which part of the process requires closer attention.
Business Intelligence connects warehouse and shipping data
With COSYS Business Intelligence and process data analysis, data from individual fulfillment stages can be consolidated and analysed.
Dashboards can compare order throughput times, picking performance, overdue orders, shipment volumes and developments over time. Carrier data can complement these analyses: How much time passes between parcel creation and collection? How are delivery times developing? Are there differences between carriers, periods or seasonal peaks?
Process Mining helps reveal actual process paths and deviations. COSYS AI functions can additionally support the identification of anomalies and correlations within large volumes of process data.
Individual scans, bookings and timestamps therefore become a comprehensive view of fulfillment performance.
Identify causes instead of simply shipping faster
Data-driven fulfillment is about more than analysing carrier performance. Only by connecting warehouse management, in-house logistics, shipping data and carrier information can fulfillment managers identify where orders are actually losing time.
This provides a reliable basis for coordinating staff, picking, shipping preparation and carrier processes – particularly when order volumes increase during seasonal peaks.
COSYS combines modular software solutions, mobile data capture hardware and services with Business Intelligence, Process Mining, Computer Vision and AI. Fulfillment can therefore be digitally documented and continuously analysed from the first pick to successful delivery.
