Since hitting a record high of $5,602 at the end of January, the price of gold has corrected significantly. In June, there were outflows from funds again, but global inflows into gold ETFs have remained positive since the beginning of the year. Global gold ETFs managed $526 billion in assets at the end of June. This represents a 6 percent decline in the first half of the year, primarily due to lower gold prices. In fact, total holdings rose by approximately 18 metric tons of gold in the first six months of the current year.
On average, trading volume on the gold market reached an all-time high in the first half of the year. Although it declined in June, this was due to global investors further reducing their holdings of gold ETFs. The largest losses were seen in North America. Nevertheless, global inflows into gold ETFs remained positive at $8 billion. Asia saw particularly strong inflows, and Europe also recorded solid inflows. In North America in particular, the decline in the gold price led investors to reduce their allocations to gold ETFs.
The World Gold Council expects inflows into regional gold ETFs to stabilize. In general, the gold price is expected to remain relatively stable , although certain factors could trigger a surge in the gold price. The general uncertainties and risks should continue to encourage investors to turn to gold as a hedge for their portfolios. This should also benefit gold ETFs. In these times, gold should continue to shine as a safe haven.
