The Imaging Source Introduces Aptiris: Next-Generation USB 3.1 Autofocus Camera Series for Dynamic Machine Vision

The Imaging Source, international manufacturer of machine vision cameras and industrial imaging software, announces the launch of its Aptiris Series, a new line of compact USB 3.1 autofocus industrial cameras designed to deliver consistently sharp imaging in environments where object distance, working distance, or system geometry cannot remain constant. Engineered for integrators and product developers who require reliability, precision, and easy system integration, the Aptiris Series brings a major modernization of The Imaging Source’s autofocus portfolio.

Precision Autofocus for Real-World Variability

Some vision systems operate under conditions where object distance varies, limiting the effectiveness of fixed-focus optics. The Aptiris Series addresses this challenge with software-driven one-push autofocus, ensuring stable focus performance even when distance to the target changes, enabling sharp, repeatable imaging in dynamic environments.

The cameras utilize a motorized M12 lens mount and combine autofocus precision with high sensitivity and low-light performance. At launch, the series will be available as prototypes with two rolling-shutter CMOS sensors from onsemi and one global shutter sensor from Sony:

  • AR0521 (5 MP): 2592 × 1944 resolution, 60 fps, rolling shutter, 1/2.5" optical format
  • IMX568 (5 MP): 2448 × 2048 resolution, 74 fps, global shutter, 1/1.8" optical format
  • AR2020 (19.7 MP): 5120 × 3840 resolution, 19 fps, rolling shutter, 1/1.8" optical format

All sensors deliver high dynamic range and reliable imaging across varied lighting conditions, while providing the resolution options required for precision-driven inspection, measurement, and analytics applications. These models are now available as prototypes in limited quantities for selected customers and partners, with series production scheduled for all models in Q2 2026.

Engineered for Integration

Aptiris supports USB3 Vision as well as UVC (USB Video Class), enabling cross-platform compatibility and simplifying integration with embedded systems, PCs, and heterogeneous vision stacks. Developers benefit from:

  • USB 3.1 (USB Type-C) interface with power over USB
  • Autofocus total stroke of 1.3 mm
  • Stepping rotation of 12.5 µm/step
  • I/O Trigger
  • Compact form factor: 36 × 36 × 33.8 mm

These features allow integrators to streamline mechanical design, reduce cabling complexity, and deploy autofocus capability in environments that traditionally rely on fixed-focus imaging.

By upgrading to USB 3.1, expanding sensor options, and addressing the growing demand for adaptive imaging, the Aptiris platform is well-positioned to support next-generation automation, AI-enabled analytics, and embedded computer-vision workloads across multiple industries, including medical diagnostics, lab automation, smart logistics, retail analytics, and compact embedded-vision systems.

Momchil Binev, Senior Product Manager at The Imaging Source, commented: “With Aptiris, we set out to design a camera family that brings high-performance autofocus to the realities of modern machine-vision integration. Not every vision task allows for fixed optics or tightly controlled setups. Aptiris is designed to handle these real-world constraints while still offering the performance expected from high-end industrial imaging.”
