Preparations for the recommissioning of Source One Plastics‘ modern recycling plant

Following a fire in parts of the recycling hall on 27 January, clean-up work has begun on the Source One Plastics GmbH site. Employees of the recycling company are cleaning the first sections to make them usable again. The plant is supposed to go back into operation this year and reach its full production capacity.

A technical defect caused the fire in a product bunker next to the modern sorting and recycling plant. The damage to the plant and the building’s infrastructure totalled tens of millions of euros. Subject to the final expert opinions, the warehouse and the entire logistics area have remained intact. Source One Plastics is permitted to resume work in these and other defined areas. The safety-relevant toxicological and static tests have been completed.

‘By renting office containers directly, we have initially ensured that operations can run smoothly,’ says Kai Hoyer, Managing Director of Source One Plastics. ‘We are currently liaising closely with our partner companies who supported the construction of the plant and are exploring possible replacement or repair measures, particularly with the manufacturers of our special machines.’ Deliveries and remaining stock quantities are currently being rerouted or transshipped in the logistics area that has been preserved.

The remediation of the fire site is proceeding in close consultation with the insurance company and various experts. First of all, the plant’s remaining units will be removed, cleaned and stored. A specialist company will then decontaminate and clear the fire site. "We then start rebuilding the hall straight away. This is essential for restoring the production area and rebuilding the plant," says Kai Hoyer. "We can only predict when we will be able to put the plant back into operation once we have the final damage assessment. However, we are confident that the plant will be running at full production capacity again this year."

The employees of Source One Plastics support this goal. ‘Of course, the fire situation was initially a shock for all colleagues involved,’ says Kai Hoyer. "But now there is a positive spirit of optimism. We can start with the first recovery measures, and I am proud of how motivated our team is in dealing with the situation. We can feel the commitment of each individual to return to their previous working routine as quickly as possible. We are also receiving a lot of encouragement from outside. That is helping immensely."
