GEDA transport platforms on a historic mission

Spiš Castle, which sits just four kilometres east of Spišské Podhradie on a rocky travertine ridge 634 metres above sea level, is one of the most impressive fortresses in Central Europe. Covering an area of over 4 hectares (approx. 41,426 m²) and rising about 200 metres above the surrounding town, the castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. It is located in the eastern part of the Hornádska kotlina valley basin and is an important landmark of the region.

Since the end of the Second World War, the castle has been restored time and again. Especially since the late 1990s, after the founding of independent Slovakia, intensive work has been carried out to secure and preserve the ruins. The focus is on preserving historical building structures. The Romanesque palace, for example, is being structurally secured, which also includes stabilising the rocky subsoil. However, given the unique, romantic backdrop, this work poses a number of logistical and technical challenges.

GEDA transport platform as support in the fairy-tale setting

The GEDA 500 Z/ZP was selected for the efficient and safe transport of materials and personnel on the construction site. This transport platform is designed for tough everyday construction site use and can be used both as a material hoist and for transporting people – thanks to two separate control systems. With a lifting speed of 24 m/min in material mode and 12 m/min in personnel mode, the GEDA 500 Z/ZP ensures rapid construction progress.

Thanks to its compact design, high load capacity and various platform variants, the GEDA 500 Z/ZP can be ideally adapted to the respective construction site conditions. The spacious, open loading platform offers sufficient space for a wide variety of building materials. With a lifting height of 16 metres and three stops, this project is no problem for the GEDA 500 Z/ZP, especially as the transport platform can also reach a maximum lifting height of up to 100 metres.

The three floors of the construction site are equipped with a sophisticated floor safety system, in this case with GEDA Comfort floor safety doors. The C platform variant was chosen for the special requirements of this project, as it can easily transport even heavy and bulky building materials with a load capacity of 850 kg.

Material transport in the bag

Transporting materials on the construction site itself was no problem thanks to the GEDA 500 Z/ZP. However, delivering the transport platform to the construction site was all the more challenging. The remote location of the castle and the difficult access routes required an unusual solution. This was found by our long-standing partner AP-Lift s.r.o., which provides professional and qualified service support in the region and also mastered this challenge with ease. A helicopter was ultimately used to transport the hoist: the GEDA 500 Z/ZP was flown directly to its destination from the air. This project impressively combines historical building fabric with state-of-the-art technology – in a manner that is as innovative as it is spectacular.
