Copper is essential for the energy transition

Energy systems are undergoing a transformation. Copper is used for the expansion of power grids, renewable energy, and the electrification of transportation.

According to estimates, renewable energy production is expected to roughly double by 2030. That would then account for about half of global electricity production. Electricity also has to be transported and stored. It is clear that this development will require certain raw materials such as copper. Demand for raw materials, especially copper, is growing faster than supply. The problem is not availability, but rather the ability to extract it at the necessary speed.

Currently, the supply of copper is around 31 million tons per year (22 million tons of production and 9 million tons of recycling). From 2026 to 2030, however, demand is expected to rise to around 35 million tons of copper per year. Rising copper prices are therefore inevitable. For example, the CEO of BHP believes that a copper price of US$15,000 per ton is quite possible due to the significant supply bottlenecks in the market. The ICSG estimates that growing demand and slow production growth will result in an annual deficit of approximately 150,000 tons.

Copper demand is being driven by megatrends such as e-mobility, the booming artificial intelligence industry, and electrification, which requires wires and cables. Companies such as Axo Copper and Mogotes Metals are working to ensure a supply of copper.

Axo Copper https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/axo-copper-corp/ – owns the La Huerta copper project in Mexico. It covers approximately 11,300 hectares and is a new copper discovery in the promising Sierra Madre belt. The company recently acquired Sapuchi Minera and with it the Antonio gold project in Mexico.

Mogotes Metals https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/mogotes-metals-inc/ – is in the exploration and development stage and owns copper and gold projects in the promising Vicuña district in Argentina and Chile. The Filo Sur copper project (Argentina) appears to be particularly promising. A private placement has brought new money into the company’s coffers.
