Agriculture and mining play a central role in Nicaragua, located in Central America, and in Ecuador, located in the northwest of South America. In Nicaragua, considerable investment has been made in the gold mining sector in recent years, as rich gold deposits beckon. Both countries are developing countries, have economic and cultural similarities and face similar political and social challenges. Ecuador wants to expand its mining sector in order to boost economic growth. Modern mining techniques and foreign investment have led to the discovery of rich gold deposits.
Aurania Resources – https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/aurania-resources-ltd/ – has been searching for gold, copper and silver in south-eastern Ecuador since 2017. In addition to professional mining techniques, old archive reports were used to find the remains of Spanish gold mines from the colonial era. The former production sites of Logroño and Seville (the "lost cities") could be located in the Cutucu Cordillera in south-eastern Ecuador. This is why Aurania Resources‘ project is so aptly named The Lost Cities-Cutucu.
Gold mining has been booming in Nicaragua in recent years. Gold is now the most important export commodity there. Most mining concessions have been granted since 2007. Calibre Mining – https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/calibre-mining-corp/ – is enjoying success in Nicaragua. The company produced almost 72,000 ounces of gold in the first quarter of 2025, with almost 65,000 ounces coming from Nicaragua and around 7,000 ounces from Nevada. As a mid-tier gold producer, Calibre Mining also has development and exploration opportunities in Labrador, Newfoundland, Washington, Nevada and Nicaragua. The company will merge with Equinox Gold to create a significant gold producer.
