A snapshot of the technology job market in Switzerland in 2024

As we enter 2024, the tech landscape in Switzerland is still buzzing with change, even in the face of global economic challenges. Our tech industry is all about being inventive and lively, creating a big demand for skilled IT professionals. The catch? There’s just not enough qualified talent around, making the job market for IT specialists in Switzerland quite a peculiar one. Charles Genesty, Principal at Swiss recruitment specialist Robert Walters, breaks it down based on the newly released salary survey results.

Tech talent mismatch

Switzerland’s ongoing need for IT experts – fueled by its reputation as a global tech hub – brings about a unique challenge. Charles: "It’s not just about technical skills anymore. Language abilities and interpersonal skills are playing a bigger role in today’s hiring decisions. Things like fitting into the culture and being a good team player are crucial, creating a gap between the skills people have and what the industry is looking for. This situation is putting pressure on both employers and employees, with noticeable slowdowns in salary adjustments. As we move into 2024, being adaptable, eager to learn, and staying on top of industry trends are the things that will really set you up for success in this ever-changing IT job market.”

A fast-paced dance

“Within the tech world, it’s kind of like a fast-paced dance”, Charles says. “People typically stay with their current employer for around 2.5 years, but on the other hand, our recent survey revealed that 70% of tech professionals in Switzerland will actively explore the job market in 2024. It’s like they’ve got their antennas up, eagerly sniffing out fresh opportunities.”

And it’s not just any tech jobs they’re after—it’s particularly the ones in IT services, banking, pharma, investment management, and biotech. “These sectors are like magnets for tech pros because they’re diving headfirst into the tech wave. It’s a fusion dance of technology and these industries, creating this hunger for specialized skills and know-how. It’s like the tech world saying Hey, we’re ready for a remix, bring on the challenges”, Charles explains.

IT salary expectations for 2024

The Robert Walters salary survey also revealed that many tech experts, about 55%, expect to receive a higher salary in 2024. “It’s good news that 52% of companies are planning to give better salary packages in response to this, showing they’re dedicated to retaining and attracting top talent”, Charles concludes.
