As makers of outdoor and bicycle bags, ORTLIEB has a need to dispose of fabric straps and remains after production.  

“For years we have stipulated in our development and design guidelines that the inevitable fabric scraps and cutoffs must be as low as possible. While ORTLIEB has optimized a lot in this area in recent years, nevertheless, minimal amounts of waste are still created. We are very pleased to now have found a meaningful use and upcycling option for them," said ORTLIEB Managing Director Martin Esslinger.

In Fahrer Berlin — a bicycle accessories company that also produces its products in Germany and in cooperation with workshops for people with disabilities— ORTLIEB has found a way to recycle scrap materials.

Fahrer Berlin uses only used and scrap materials to make products like mudflaps, ebike battery covers, racks and bags. In addition to the fabric scraps, Ortlieb will also be providing Fahrer Berlin with any defective bags that are sent in but are damaged beyond repair.

“Together with ORTLIEB we can avoid a lot of garbage, and produce a number of really sustainable upcycling products. In addition to small items such as key fobs, we can also use the scraps to make purses and trouser bands. A really great partnership that is also good for the environment. "
