51st German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones Idar-Oberstein 2021 and 32nd German Young Talent Competition for Gemstone and Jewellery Design Idar-Oberstein 2021

The jury of the “51st German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones Idar-Oberstein 2021” and the 32nd German Young Talent Competition for Gemstone and Jewellery Design Idar-Oberstein 2021” met in Idar-Oberstein on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

In both competitions (71 Main competition, 24 Young talent competition) entrants have been submitted from the following countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain and USA.

Theme of the “51th German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones Idar-Oberstein 2021” was:

“into the light”

Both the gemstone design and the design of a jewellery piece made of precious metal and precious stones were allowed. Thus, unmounted gemstones, the gemstone in the jewellery (here, only precious metals may be used), the gemstone object and the gemstone sculpture were allowed. The use of synthetic gems was not admitted. Pearls were only allowed in combination with gemstones.

1st prize – Certificate and 4,000 €

A perfectly crafted bracelet jewellery is the best work of this year’s main competition. As soon as this piece of jewellery is put around the arm, the previously closed buds open by a perfect mechanism and reveal their golden blossoms with their sparkling gemstones. The first rays of sunlight bring it to life which means that the competition theme has been excellently met.

Theme of the „32nd   German Young Talent Competition for Gemstone and Jewellery Design Idar-Oberstein 2021” was:

“Fragile – handle with care”

Both the gemstone design and the design of a jewellery piece with precious stones were permitted. Thus, unmounted gemstones, the gemstone in finished jewellery, the gemstone object and the gemstone sculpture were allowed. The use of synthetic gems was permitted. Pearls were only allowed in combination with gemstones.

An outstandingly crafted revolving gemstone object took first prize in this year’s young talent competition. It symbolizes the fragility of our world due to climate change and the resulting changing seasons. The award winner cautions: "Our world has a huge burden to bear because of us."
