CARY: Smart multifunctional terminal streamlines processes and relieves enterprises

Since 20 April, all German companies have been obliged to offer their employees a Covid-19 test at least once a week. With CARY, Irlbacher is launching a smart hygiene management and organisation system that streamlines and digitalises the corresponding processes. The tried-and-tested system takes care of scheduling appointments and – after disinfection of the hands and measuring the body temperature – organises test routing. The CARY app ensures ID confirmation, and facilitates secure communication between employer, employee, and test laboratory. The system was developed together with the software experts from macio (Kiel) and is specially tailored to the requirements of companies, public institutions, schools, authorities, museums, shopping centres, train stations, airports, etc. CARY is available as an OEM product.

The CARY floor-standing device is an information terminal and hand disinfection unit in one. Its functionality, proven in the operational practice of several companies, surpasses all currently offered competitive products. A radar sensor detects an approaching person and takes CARY out of the energy-saving standby mode. Additional sensors make it possible to identify the person – e.g. via RFID tag for time recording or access control – or optionally via face recognition using the built-in camera. Measuring the body temperature through an IR camera can also be added to detect asymptomatic diseases before rapid tests even respond.

A further sensor detects the position of the hands in the disinfector. The latter is evenly and pleasantly brightly lit, because user tests show that people do not like to stick their hands in a dark shaft. Having reached the optimal position, CARY sprays a sufficient amount of disinfectant and monitors that it actually reaches the hands. At the same time, the person is informed about the correct way to disinfect hands via the 21.5“ touch display.

In cooperation with the CARY app, the height-adjustable floor-standing device takes over the preparatory activities for line tests, such as an anonymous request for entry for the persons waiting by a numerical code. The connection to the app is made via WLAN. After identification and disinfection of the hands, the person confirms its ID via the touch display. Further information can also be displayed there, for example the number of the test cabin or whether it is free. After the test has been evaluated, the result is forwarded to the employee via the app. The servers for the data management are exclusively hosted in Germany.

Furthermore, the CARY floor-standing device also works as a gateway for wireless sensors distributed throughout the room (e.g., temperature, humidity, CO2 content) and can trigger LED signal modules. Thus, different departments of the company can be divided into cohorts in order to break chains of infection effectively. The CO2 sensor reminds people that it is time again to open all windows for an air exchange as suggested by the International Aerosol Research Assembly (IARA) – because the risk of infection is significantly higher in (poorly ventilated) indoor spaces.

CARY has a built-in 3-liter tank (approx. 5/8 US gal) for disinfectants and therefore rarely needs to be refilled. The quick-fill neck is accessible from the outside and lockable. In good time before the tank is empty, the built-in level sensor informs the caretaker services – directly via the app to the smartphone. A drip tray is also accessible from the rear, in order to properly dispose of excess disinfectant etc. and to facilitate cleaning of the device.

The large touch display of the floor-standing device can be used in a variety of ways, for instance as an information terminal welcoming visitors, for displaying language-neutral video sequences, for displaying the menu plan in the canteen, or even for employer brand messages. All functions are controlled simply and easily via the app.

CARY has a lockable service door; the device can be fully opened. Ergonomic handles and further well thought-out details complete the system made in Germany.

Über die Irlbacher Blickpunkt Glas GmbH

Founded in 1935 in Schönsee (Bavaria), the family-run Irlbacher group is today a global specialist in glass technology. On ten hectares, over 600 employees process more than 50 types of glass with the highest precision – for hygienic HMIs, elegant interior and exterior lights, stylish stoves, aesthetic building technology, functional sanitary objects or micrometre-precise for the process industry.

Irlbacher has the widest portfolio in glass processing worldwide. An in-house printing and design centre implements smart multi-material solutions. The Application technology department is constantly exploring new technical possibilities. The own R&D facilities contribute sophisticated touch solutions – and use the back of the HMI glasses to directly solder the corresponding electronics onto. Not to forget the company’s own mechanical engineering: These machines, transforming over 85 years of experience and knowledge into industrial processes, cannot be bought.

Over time, Irlbacher has developed into a solution provider for complex, glass-based assemblies. The basis for this is our own modular solution construction kit, consisting of a dozen well-developed technology platforms.

The company has continuously invested in sustainability since 1990 and is working on reducing its ecological footprint. Since 2018 Irlbacher has been one of the few medium-sized companies in the climate protection and energy efficiency group of the German economy. At the end of 2020, the company’s own CHP with a total output of 2.1 MW went into operation. This combined heat and power system saves over 1,100 t of CO2 every year.
