A True Milestone: 5,000 Excimer Lasers for LASIK Refractive Eye Surgery Shipped

Coherent recently delivered the 5,000th laser of the OEM ExciStar laser series for refractive corneal surgery. The OEM ExciStar family of compact excimer lasers has achieved great success in refractive corneal surgery for permanent visual acuity correction with the associated instrument manufacturers. The longevity of the laser components and the excellent pulse stability at the ultra-short 193 nm laser wavelength have made the ExciStar family the ideal ablation source for ever faster and more precise corneal ablation over the last two decades and made Coherent the global market leader in this medical application area. With its extremely short UV wavelength, the ExciStar also plays a leading role in industrial precision marking of spectacle lenses and laser marking of diamonds. Further applications can be found in laser-based protein and solid sample analysis.

Richard Waldermann, General Manager of the Coherent Excimer Laser Business Unit, explains: „I am delighted that our ExciStar team achieved this truly extraordinary milestone in the medical segment. They are all working continuously for our OEM customers to further develop the ExciStar family and to successfully shape the future of visual acuity correction with our lasers.”
