Decathlon World Champion Niklas Kaul Drives Opel

  • King of the athletes: "Athlete of the Year" 2019 is new Opel partner
  • Opel makes you mobile: Niklas Kaul on tour with all-electric Corsa-e
  • The big goal: 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo

At 21, Niklas Kaul is not only the youngest, but also the first German champion in decathlon history. Now the “Athlete of the Year” 2019 is Opel’s new partner. The company provides the purely battery-electric Opel Corsa-e for trips to training and competitions. For his part, the athlete will be involved in media campaigns and in Opel dealership activities throughout Germany. The big goal of Team Kaul next year is a successful participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"We are very happy to have such a special young athlete on our team," said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller, himself a passionate marathon runner. “It was fascinating to see how Niklas dealt with the World Cup success and the hype surrounding himself in a reflective and mature manner. With his commitment and his personality, he fits perfectly with Opel – we too want to inspire with our products and always remain approachable. "

From insider tip to top star

Experts have had an eye on Niklas Kaul for a long time. However, sports fans around the world were amazed when the Mainz student became the youngest world champion in the history of decathlon at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha (Qatar). He is also the first German world champion. Torsten Voss had already won the title of king of athletes in 1987 for the then GDR.

Niklas Kaul’s sporting track record at a glance: 2016 U20 World Champion, 2017 U20 European Champion with a new U20 World Record, 2019 winner of the U23 European Championship as the last junior title before the sensational World Cup success in Qatar.

“World champion – that’s what every athlete dreams of in every training session”, says Niklas Kaul. “A dream came true for me in Doha in 2019, and I am very proud of this achievement. Now it is time to look toward the Olympic Games. Of course, I would have liked to start this summer, but there was no alternative to postponing it until next year. I will make optimal use of the time until then and I am happy to have found a partner in Opel who will give my team and me great support in preparing for Tokyo.”
